Midwest Energy Performing Leak Checks in Hays

April 04, 2012

The Annual Yard Line Natural Gas Leak Survey is underway in Hays. Midwest Energy and Southern Cross crews will be surveying all the lines in the city served with natural gas for the next few weeks. Several rural lines will also be checked.

Homeowners are asked to keep their dogs leashed and their yards accessible for the surveyors. According to Bob Helm, Manager of Corporate Communications, “The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires that all lines be surveyed for leaks every three years. Midwest Energy has chosen to survey yard lines every year throughout the system. The company has an excellent safety record with their natural gas and electric service, and this is just one more way to continue that performance.”

Leaks are classified in several different categories. Those that need immediate attention, if found, are repaired immediately. Other leaks are repaired as necessary. According to Helm, “The areas we checked last year are in really good shape. We have found very few leaks, and those were very small. It’s good to know the system is working the way it’s supposed to. We do ask that residents leave their gates unlocked, and restrain their animals, so our crews can check the yard line up to the house.” Midwest Energy, Inc. serves nearly 90,000 natural gas and electric customers throughout central and western Kansas, and is headquartered in Hays, Ks.
